72% of the steel produced today uses coke produced from metallurgical coal. The top four metallurgical coal producing countries are China, Australia, the United States, and Russia. Metallurgical coal is a key ingredient in the production of steel. Steel is used in every aspect of modern life. In 2017, the U.S. iron and steel industry accounted for $520 billion in economic output and generated $56 billion in federal, state, and local taxes. Coal mining in the U.S. accounted for a total of 535,372 direct, indirect, and induced jobs. This resulted in $37.2 billion in total labor income. U.S. steelmakers made more than 96 million tons of steel in 2018. That is up from 90 million tons in 2017. It takes 1,548 pounds of metallurgical coal, 3,400 pounds of iron ore, and 441 pounds of limestone to make 1 ton of steel.
